(VOVWORLD) - The Coast Guard Region 3 Command on Thursday organized a mock trial and legal seminar in Vung Tau ward and Long Hai commune of Ho Chi Minh City - two key localities with large fishing fleets - to raise public awareness of the legal consequences of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Political Commissar Le Van Tu said the activity is part of a comprehensive campaign being carried out in the six provinces and cities under its management, closely integrated with ongoing maritime patrol and inspection efforts.
Through scenario-based activities, Coast Guard Region 3 brings real-life cases into the spotlight to educate and deter by showing the consequences fishermen will face if they violate the law, contributing to Vietnam’s push to have the European Commission’s “yellow card” lifted.
Law enforcement officers addressed fishermen’s concerns, focusing on vessel monitoring system (VMS) requirements, permitted fishing boundaries, and penalties for violations.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard Region 4 Command hosted a communication session Thursday on preventing IUU fishing.
Officers provided fishing ports, boat landings, and fishing vessels with QR codes which will allow fishermen to quickly get important legal information from their smartphones, a sort of digital “IUU Handbook”.
