Countries welcome deal to transition away from fossil fuels

(VOVWORLD) - The 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP28, concluded on Wednesday in Dubai, the UAE, with the final text of the climate deal calling for transitioning away from fossil fuels. It marked the first time that firm action on fossil fuels has been agreed at a COP summit.

Addressing the event, COP28 President Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber and UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on countries to act immediately to turn commitments into real economic results.

French Energy Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher called the COP28 agreement a victory for multilateralism and climate diplomacy. She said countries need to create individual plans to gradually eliminate fossil fuels.

US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry praised the cooperative spirit of the parties at COP28.

Canadian Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said the agreement creates an opportunity for short-term actions and incentives to implement a clean, appropriate, and safe transition process that can limit warming to 1.5 ºC.
