Elections offer opportunity for Vietnamese to raise voices over key matters: Australian expert

(VOVWORLD) - The elections of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and the People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 tenure on May 23 is an opportunity for the Vietnamese people to express their voices over the nation’s leadership and the strengthening of local governments’ apparatus, said Professor Carl Thayer, an expert from Australia’s New South Wales University.

Mr. Thayer said that this year's elections saw more than 69 million citizens eligible to vote, and all of the candidates were thoroughly evaluated to ensure qualification. He said the list of qualified candidates also exhibits diversity in composition with a high proportion of women and ethnic minorities, at 45% and 21%, respectively.

Professor Thayer said that Vietnam’s socio-economic goals were approved by the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, adding the new National Assembly is responsible for developing the program and draft budget for the following year and amend the law or pass a new law to achieve the set objectives.
