After renewing the sanctions in effect since 2014 for the illegal annexation of Crimea, the extension covers 14 packages of sanctions adopted since February 24, 2022, when Russia began its “special military campaign” in Ukraine.

The EU sanctions consist of a wide spectrum of measures, including restrictions on trade, finance, technology, industry, transportation, and luxury goods. The EU also imposed sanctions on Russia for trying to bypass previous sanctions.

Russia considers these sanctions illegal and unhelpful and President Vladimir Putin has said lifting all sanctions is a condition for resolving the situation in Ukraine.
