(VOVWORLD) - Prolonged heavy rains and flooding battered Vietnam's central region on Monday, causing significant loss of life and infrastructure damage in Hue city, Lam Dong, Khanh, Hoa, and Dak Lak provinces.

6 people were killed in a landslide on Sunday in Khanh Le pass, a steep pass connecting Lam Dong and Khanh Hoa province.
In Lam Dong province, flood water inundated Hiep Thanh commune. 90% of the local soil has been saturated, posing risks of flash floods and landslides, said the provincial hydro-meteorological station.
Flood water has also reached low-lying residential areas in Dak Lak province.
In Hue city, slope failures rigged by prolonged rains have paralyzed traffics on Ho Chi Minh Road and blocked access to several areas here.
Phan Trong Nghia, chairman of Hoa Chau Ward People's Committee, said three-quarters of the ward has been inundated. The locality is mobilizing manpower, vehicles, and supplies to help evacuate its residents and prepare for prolonged floods.
“Hoa Chau is located near two river basins, the Huong River and the Bo River. Most of the former Quang Thanh commune and Huong Phong ward have been inundated. Our civil defense committee is working to relocate households living in low-lying areas and stock up on food in the wake of flooding," Nghia said.
