(VOVWORLD) - On the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Capital’s Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2025), the Hanoi People’s Committee on Thursday broke ground on the Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao section of the Hanoi Metro Line 2 project, with a total investment more than 1.3 billion USD.

This is a nationally significant infrastructure project funded by official development assistance (ODA) from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and counterpart funding from the Hanoi city budget.
The line will span nearly 11.5 kilometers, including approximately 9 kilometers underground, and will operate 10 trains with a designed speed of 100 km/h on elevated sections and 80 km/h in tunnels. The metro line is expected to be completed and put into operation by 2029.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Hanoi’s Vice Chairman Duong Duc Tuan said: “The Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao metro line is a key transportation project of the capital and a symbol of Hanoi’s vision, determination, and aspiration for renewal. It represents a move toward a transit-oriented urban development (TOD) model, where each station becomes not just a stop but a nucleus for modern, smart urban growth — integrating transport, commerce, culture, tourism, and community life.”
According to Hanoi’s master plan for development through 2045, with a vision to 2065, the city will develop 15 urban metro lines with a total length of around 620 kilometers, forming a modern, high-capacity public transport network that seamlessly connects the city center with suburban and surrounding urban areas.
