(VOVWORLD) - Iceland said Tuesday it had suspended work at its embassy in Russia, making it the first European country to do so.

The suspension does not constitute a severance of diplomatic relations, according to the Icelandic foreign ministry’s statement.
As soon as conditions permit, Iceland will prioritize the resumption of operations, it added.
Iceland’s embassy in Moscow also represents Iceland in eight other countries in the region.
In June, Iceland announced a plan to suspend embassy operations in Russia because commercial, cultural, and political relations had slumped to an “all-time low”.
Iceland also requested that Russia limit the operations of its Embassy in Reykjavik.
Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that Moscow will take the decision into account when Russia establishes relations with Iceland in the future.
