Turkish officials initially blamed the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) for the attack. The blast came after the release of an audio message – purportedly made by IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi – in which he urges fighters to attack both Turkey and Saudi Arabia. This could be retaliation by IS for the fact that Turkey is now participating in the coalition against IS despite objections from the Iraqi government.
