Israel, Hezbollah agree to ceasefire brokered by US and France, to take effect Wednesday

(VOVWORLD) - On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, following weeks of intensive diplomacy.

In a joint statement, the two leaders emphasized that the agreement aims to "permanently end hostilities" and foster lasting peace, enabling residents on both sides of the border to return safely to their homes. The United States and France pledged to ensure the ceasefire’s full implementation and to lead international efforts to strengthen the Lebanese army's capacity.

Speaking from the White House, President Biden confirmed that he had held separate phone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, both of whom expressed support for the ceasefire.

The agreement is set to take effect at 4:00 a.m. local time on November 27.
