Lawmakers discuss merger of Vietnam’s provinces and cities from 63 to 34
(VOVWORLD) -The National Assembly on Wednesday discussed a report on the arrangement of provincial administrative units in 2025, under which Vietnam will see a reduction of province and cities from 63 to 34, including 6 centrally-run cities and 28 provinces.

Lawmakers said merging provinces will enable localities to restructure their development space.
“Localities within a province must be connected and ensure transport and digital infrastructure, which require resources, most importantly financial resources. That’s why I propose that when considering the Law on State Budget, the land resources for localities in the period of 2026-2030 must be taken into consideration,” according to Deputy Tran Hoang Ngan representing Ho Chi Minh City.
The deputies said the merger of provinces is a historic decision and stressed the need to arrange cadres, civil servants, workers and handle redundant headquarters appropriately after the merger.
