The statement urged “the pursuance of dialogue and reconciliation in accordance with the will and interests of the people of Myanmar.” It also stressed the need to “uphold democratic institutions and processes, refrain from violence, and fully respect human rights, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law.”

A spokesperson for the Chinese delegation to the UN said he hopes the statement will lead to positive results.

US national security advisor Jake Sullivan said the US is considering targeted sanctions against individuals and military-controlled entities involved in the military takeover of Myanmar.
