Nguyen Xuan Phuc sworn in as President of Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) -The National Assembly on Monday morning elected Nguyen Xuan Phuc as  President of Vietnam. After being elected, the new President was sworn in.

This has been the first time that the National Assembly elected an incumbent Prime Minister as President.

The state president is Vietnam's top representative in both internal and external affairs and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

Nguyen Xuan Phuc was born on July 20, 1954, in Quang Nam province. He has been a member of the Party Politburo since 2011 and a member of the Party Central Committee since 2006.

Mr. Phuc held numerous positions, including Chairman of the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee, Deputy Inspector General of the Government, Minister, Chairman of the Government Office, and Deputy Prime Minister. He has served as Prime Minister since 2016.

Later on Monday, the President will submit the nomination for the National Assembly to elect the Prime Minister. In the afternoon, the National Assembly will elect the Prime Minister by secret ballot and vote on a Resolution on electing the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister will then be sworn in at the National Assembly.
