The region has been given priority in policies and resources to rapidly reduce its poverty rate, but the number of poor households remains high.

Mr. Phuc said: “Vietnam’s targets and missions on sustainable poverty reduction haven’t changed under the new poverty standards, but we must implement them comprehensively and efficiently so that the poor can increase their incomes and gain full access to basic social services. More importantly, we must determine the causes of poverty so we can design appropriate solutions for each region and province.”

Vietnam’s northwestern region includes Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Yen Bai, Son La, Dien Bien, and Lai Chau province.
