PM calls for strong action to eradicate IUU fishing in Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) - A nationwide inspection campaign will be launched to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, focusing on cracking down on so-called “three-no” fishing vessels (no registration, no inspection, no fishing license).

Speaking at the 20th meeting of the National Steering Committee on Combating IUU Fishing on Tuesday, connecting online with 21 coastal provinces and cities, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh urged all agencies and localities to act decisively and effectively with the ultimate goal of eliminating IUU fishing and lifting the EC’s “yellow card” warning to uphold national reputation and ensure the sustainable development of the fishing sector.

He said:  “If a vessel loses signal, it must be inspected. If the VMS signal remains idle in one location, authorities should know immediately. We must get the job done. Offenders must be prosecuted and punished strictly.”

He assigned the Ministry of National Defense to tighten patrols in offshore and border sea areas; the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to prepare a technical working plan with the EC inspection team by November 10; and coastal localities to mark registered vessels by November 15.

The Ministry of Public Security is to launch a management application for fishing vessels and fishermen integrated into the VNeID platform by November 10.
