This will be the first official meeting between the leaders of the two countries since Mr. Raisi was sworn in as President of Iran in August 2020.

Russia is participating in negotiations to restore the Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 Group, including the UK, France, US, Russia, China, and Germany.

Under the deal, sanctions on Iran will be lifted in exchange for Tehran curbing its nuclear program. However, in 2018, then-US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the agreement, after which Iran began to shrink its commitments in the agreement.
