Romanian PM escapes rocket attack on NATO base in Afghanistan

(VOVworld) – Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta and other high-level officials were safely evacuated Sunday from a NATO base in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta and his officials had to evacuate from a NATO base in Kandahar, Afghanistan, after a rocket attack hit the base. 

Ponta and his Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister were on a visit to Afghanistan for a ceremony to mark the withdrawal of Romanian troops. A rocket attack occurred while the Romanian delegation was eating dinner with the soldiers. No casualties have been reported so far and the Romanian delegation stayed on schedule. Approximately 2,000 Romanian soldiers have been deployed to Afghanistan. Most will be withdrawn next month, leaving some 200 remain in Afghanistan for training missions.
