Russia ready to talk with the Trump administration about Ukraine

(VOVWORLD) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday he is ready to talk with the new US administration about the conflict in Ukraine, stressing that Moscow has never rejected dialogue and has always been open to cooperation with any US administration.

But to enhance stability and security in the international arena, dialogue should be based on equality and mutual respect, Putin said.

The most important thing, he said, is to eliminate the root causes of the crisis. He reiterated that a potential resolution of the Ukraine conflict should not involve a temporary truce, but "long-term peace" based on respect for the legitimate interests of all countries in the region.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed on Monday the importance of trans-Atlantic relations for both Europe and the US. Scholz told the Rheinische Post newspaper that the US is Germany's closest ally and underscored the importance of Washington to democracy in Germany and NATO’s role as the guarantor of Germany’s security.

Germany needs stable relations with the US, he said, adding that his two phone conversations with Trump were very friendly and good talks.
