It marks Mogadishu's strong return to the global political stage after decades of turmoil and a shift from a conflict hotspot to a more proactive role in addressing global peace and security issues.

According to the Security Council's work program, the Somali delegation in New York will manage the monthly agenda of the 15-member body, chair sessions, discussions and negotiations on resolutions related to peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, humanitarian crisis response, and promote respect for international law. As the rotating chair, Somalia is also responsible for coordinating positions among members and issuing statements on behalf of the Security Council.

Somali and regional media outlets have described the news as a "historic milestone" for a country that has endured decades of civil war, institutional collapse, and reliance on international peacekeeping missions.
