(VOVWORLD) -Afghanistan's officials will attend the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), marking the first time this South Asian country will join a global forum since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
At a press conference on Saturday in Kabul, Abdul Qahar Balkhi, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, confirmed that the government delegation will leave for Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to attend COP29 scheduled to open on Monday. Some sources said that the Taliban officials will attend COP29 meetings as observers.
The Taliban government had previously planned to attend COP27 in Egypt and COP28 in the United Arab Emirates but both failed. This time, host Azerbaijan invited the Afghan environment agency officials to COP29. In February this year, Azerbaijan reopened its embassy in Kabul.
