Turkey announces new sanctions against Syria
Turkey has announced a series of new sanctions against Syria amid mounting tension between the former allies due to Damascus’ crackdown on protesters. Turkish Minister of Customs and Trade Hayati Yazici said his country will impose a 30% tax on imports from Syria. Ankara also bans the circulation of cars, which were licensed in Syria and have been run for 20 years. On November 30th Turkey imposed sanctions on President Bashar al-Assad, including a ban on transactions with the Syrian government and its central bank, as well as a freeze on Syrian government assets in Turkey.
Damascus retaliated by suspending a free trade agreement reached with Ankara in 2004, imposing around 30 %t tax on goods from Turkey, increasing fuel oil prices and delaying truck transports.
