(VOVworld) - Ukraine will establish an elite Special Operation unit to counter threats to state security, acting Defense Minister Mykhailo Koval said at a media briefing in Kiev on Wednesday.
He added the President of Ukraine, who is Supreme Commander of the armed forces and the National Defense and Security Council, has approved the creation of the new force, which will engage in fighting and guarding the security. The new force would be formed from troops involved in the government's military operation in the East and other combat-ready personnel.
The decision was announced following President Petro Poroshenko’s announcement on a ceasefire in the East to allow armed activists to lay down their weapons. The state leader said the ceasefire was the first step in his comprehensive 14-point peace plan, calling on all parties for their support. He said the country is preparing to implement the peace plan which focuses on reforming the constitution to decentralize power.
