UK’s Labor Party denies Trump campaign’s election interference claim

(VOVWORLD) - The UK government on Wednesday played down claims of meddling in the US election, after Donald Trump’s team accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s party of “blatant foreign interference” in the US election, pointing out that Labor Party members travelled to help Kamala Harris’s campaign.

Starmer rejected the claim, saying Labor sends volunteers over to the US "every election", noting that they do it in their spare time and as volunteers.

The Trump campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission in Washington on Monday, seeking an immediate investigation into alleged "blatant foreign interference." The complaint stated that the Labor Party offered to send 100 current and former Labor Party staff members to battleground states to campaign for Trump's Democrat rival Vice President Kamala Harris.

British Environment Secretary Steve Reed said it's not unusual for supporters of a party in one country to campaign for a sister party in another country. “None of this was organized or funded by the Labor Party itself. This is individual people making their own choices. It's not against the law here or in the US,” said Reed.

Prime Minister Starmer has sought to downplay the row, insisting that he has a good relationship with the former US president and it wont be jeopardized by the complaint.

Under US law, foreign volunteers are allowed to come to the US to support election campaigns but are not permitted to give any financial support.
