(VNA) - Senior UN officials have stressed the consolidation of strong international mechanisms is vital to combat nuclear terrorism warning that countries must urgently act to tackle one of today’s most serious global threats. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told the high-level meeting on countering nuclear terrorism on Friday, held on the margins of the 67th session of the General Assembly. Ban said one of the most dangerous threats to human and the environment in the modern time is that terrorists can possess nuclear materials to make nuclear weapons. Ban added that a number of terrorists groups have publicized their ambition to hold the weapon of mass destruction while some others are looking for the material hectically and illegally to make this weapons. In such context, the UN calls for all countries to join effort and use all tools to contain this nuclear genie to prevent the proliferation to non-State actors or terrorists. Ban urged more countries to take steps to address this threat, namely through the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism and Security Council resolution 1540.
