UN Chief announces panel to promote sustainable development
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday announced the members of a high-level Panel to promote sustainable development by 2015 by achieving all Millennium Development Goals. Ban floated the idea in his report to the General Assembly on the recent World Conference on Sustainable Development known as Rio+20. Ban reminded the Assembly that in May he had announced the creation of a new panel to promote sustainable development, co-chaired by the Presidents of Indonesia and Liberia and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The Panel, with 26 members from many regions across the world, will hold its first meeting at the end of September, on the sidelines of the General Assembly. The Panel will work closely with the intergovernmental working group to draw up targets for sustainable development, as agreed at Rio+20.
