UN expresses concerns over fighting escalation in Sudan
(VOVWORLD) - A sharp escalation in fighting in Sudan’s El Facher, along with ongoing clashes between rival military factions across the country, is heightening the risk of atrocities, and worsening the already dire humanitarian crisis, senior UN officials warned on Wednesday.

Assistant Secretary-General for Africa at the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) Martha Pobee told the Security Council that the humanitarian situation there has steadily worsened, with hundreds of thousands of people internally displaced.
Joyce Msuya, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, said that civil infrastructure such as hospitals and shelters had been targeted in the fighting, with many women and children among the victims.
The conflict that broke out in Sudan in April 2023 has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, leading to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises and risk of a widespread famine.
