US now has most Covid-19 cases
(VOVWORLD) - Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the US reached more than 82,000 on Thursday, surpassing China and Italy and making the US the nation with the most novel coronavirus cases in the world.
There were 150 more deaths in the last 24 hours and so far only 620 patients have recovered. New York is the hardest-hit state with 37,000 cases, a number that is sure to rise in the next few days.
At a press conference on Thursday US President Donald Trump thanked the US Senate for passing a bipartisan emergency stimulus package worth 2trillion USD and said he hopes the bill will be approved by the House of Representatives. He urged Americans to restrict their social contacts to slow the spread of Covid-19.
President Trump also declared North Carolina a disaster area, making it the 8th state eligible to receive federal disaster relief resources to fight the Covid-19 epidemic.
The number of people in the US filing for unemployment benefits surpassed 3 million this week.
