US Senate condemns unilateral actions in East Sea

(VOVworld) - The US Senate has adopted a resolution denouncing China’s unilateral actions in the East Sea and demanding a return of the status quo before May 1, 2014. In its resolution adopted on July 10, the Senate reaffirms the US government’s strong support for freedom of navigation and other internationally lawful uses of sea and airspace in the Asia-Pacific region, and for the peaceful diplomatic resolution of outstanding territorial and maritime claims and disputes. Although the US, an Asia-Pacific power, is not a claimant party in the East Sea, it has a clear interest in encouraging and supporting regional countries to work collaboratively and diplomatically to resolve the disputes and is firmly opposed to coercion, intimidation, threats, or the use of force. According to the resolution, the increasing frequency and assertiveness of patrols and competing regulations over disputed territory and maritime areas and airspace in the East Sea are raising tensions and increasing the risk of confrontation. It says China’s territorial claims and actions are unjustifiable by international law. The US Senate urges China to withdraw its oilrig and escort vessels from the current position, marking a return to the status quo before May 1, 2014. The resolution says that it is the policy of the United States to reaffirm its unwavering commitment and support for allies and partners in the Asia-Pacific region and oppose claims that impinge on the rights, freedoms, and lawful use of the sea that belong to all nations. The US Senate calls for disputes be managed without intimidation, coercion, or force and that all claimants clarify or adjust claims in accordance with international law. The resolution supports efforts by ASEAN and the People's Republic of China to develop an effective Code of Conduct and the development of regional institutions and bodies to build practical cooperation in the region and reinforce the role of international law. The resolution fully supports the rights of claimants to exercise rights they may have to avail themselves of peaceful dispute settlement mechanisms.
