US to likely agree with Putin's START Treaty proposal, Russian official says

(VOVWORLD) - Russia is optimistic about the US reaction to President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to continue observing the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), according to a Russian official.

Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of Russia for Investment and Economic cooperation with Foreign Countries and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), said Washington is likely to agree with Moscow’s initiative.

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump said he is ready to maintain the treaty. Responding to reporters’ questions, Trump called the idea a good one, and said discussions on extending the treaty remain relevant for both countries.

The New START Treaty, signed by Russia and the US in 2010, limits the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads and delivery systems, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and heavy bombers, to agreed-upon levels.
