At a meeting in Paris on Tuesday with French Minister for Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forestry, Marine and Fisheries Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Thang stressed Vietnam’s strengthened legal framework and enforcement efforts in combating  illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, noting a sharp drop in violations. Still, small-scale fisheries need time and French support in technology and expertise to fully transition toward sustainable practices.

Minister Runacher highlighted France’s desire to deepen cooperation through initiatives such as the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), investing in renewable energy, emissions reduction, and economic growth. She confirmed France’s advocacy within the EU to help Vietnam lift its IUU “yellow card” and announced plans for a pilot project using satellite technology to manage and safeguard Vietnam’s marine resources.
