Vietnam, Laos pledge stronger ties in all fields

Speaking during the talks after the welcome ceremony, General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith highly appreciated the significance of President To Lam's first foreign business trip since taking office which he said reflects the respect that the Vietnamese Party, State, and President To Lam personally have for the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.

Discussing directions and measures to enhance cooperation, the two leaders reaffirmed the consistent policy of both countries to prioritize and strengthen their bilateral relations.

They emphasized the importance of effectively implementing high-level agreements between the two countries, as well as between ministries and sectors at all levels.

They agreed to enhance consultation on strategic issues, promote high-level exchanges and contacts, improve the effectiveness of cooperation mechanisms, and promote education about the history and traditions of the Vietnam-Laos special solidarity, especially among the younger generation.

They also discussed incorporating the history of Vietnam-Laos relations into educational curricula and coordinating the construction of historical monuments and relics, including the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Park in Vientiane.
The two sides agreed to bolster security and defense cooperation to address new challenges and committed to supporting each other in ensuring political stability, security, and social order in both countries.
They pledged to implement agreements between their Ministries of Defense and Public Security, closely coordinate border protection and management, and combat transnational crimes, drug trafficking, illegal resource exploitation, and illegal immigration.
They will continue collaborating on the search, retrieval, and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Laos, as well as the renovation of Vietnam-Laos alliance monuments.
The leaders agreed to support and promote the central role of ASEAN and ASEAN-led mechanisms. President To Lam affirmed Vietnam's wholehearted support for Laos in assuming important international roles in 2024, including the ASEAN Chairmanship and AIPA Chairmanship.
During the talks, President To Lam announced a gift from the Party, State, and people of Vietnam to the Party, State, and people of Laos with 20 VinFast electric cars to support Laos in organizing important activities during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024.
After the talks, the leaders witnessed the exchange of several cooperation documents.
