Vietnam, Malaysia eye two-way trade of 18 billion USD within next 1-2 years

(VOVWORLD) - The Prime Ministers of Vietnam and Malaysia have reaffirmed their commitment to bringing trade between the two countries to 18 billion USD within the next 1-2 years in a balanced and sustainable manner.

During talks in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim agreed to facilitate market access, encourage investment, and expand cooperation in key emerging sectors such as the digital and green economies, just energy transition, science and technology, innovation, smart agriculture, e-government, and cybersecurity. They also pledged to promote tourism, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Vietnam and Malaysia reiterated their shared stance on maintaining ASEAN unity and centrality, and on preserving peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation in the East Sea based on international law. They also agreed to pursue a peaceful, sustainable solution to the situation in Myanmar.

Following the talks, the two Prime Ministers witnessed the exchange of key cooperation documents in diplomacy, information, and education.

Speaking at a later press conference, PM Anwar Ibrahim described Vietnam as “a very close friend” while PM Pham Minh Chinh said both sides pledged to elevate bilateral ties to a new height.

PM Chinh is on an official visit to Malaysia and is also attending the 46th ASEAN Summit and related meetings from Saturday to next Wednesday.

The same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bùi Thanh Sơn led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the Commission of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community Council Meeting, and the 36th ASEAN Coordinating Council Meeting. He is scheduled to attend the ASEAN–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Monday.
