Vietnam names candidate for judge at International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam has presented the candidacy of Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, Deputy Director of the Diplomatic Academy, for the position of judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in the 2026-2035 term.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son introduced Vietnam’s nomination to the diplomatic corps in Hanoi on Thursday.

Vietnam’s first nomination of a candidate to ITLOS demonstrates the country’s consistent stance on upholding international law and its commitment to being an active member and contributor to the international community and also demonstrates its commitment to multilateralism, gender equality, and the role of women in international institutions, Mr. Son said.

Speaking to 80 ambassadors, heads of missions, and representatives of foreign embassies, Dr. Lan Anh shared her views, vision, and strong commitment to upholding the rule of law at sea, and enforcing the law with impartiality and integrity.

The diplomatic corps applauded the nomination and the candidate’s qualifications, and wished Vietnam success.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh is an expert in international law. She is currently an Arbitrator under Annex VII of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and Vice President of the Asian Society of International Law. She has conducted multiple studies of maritime dispute resolution and organized conferences and seminars on regional maritime security and the application of UNCLOS 1982. She is the author and co-author of a number of books and articles in prestigious international publications.
