“Vietnam consistently pursues sustainable marine economic development and sustainable fisheries by maintaining a fleet of ships and fishing practices appropriate to the capacity of marine resources, while fully complying with regulations on anti-illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. In recent years, Vietnam has fine-tuned its fisheries’ legal system to ensure effectiveness and efficiency and at the same time implemented multiple measures to prevent and combat IUU fishing, and strictly, transparently handled violations,” said Ms. Hang.
Regarding the recent issuance of the Action Plan for the “Peak Month of Combating Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing and Promoting Sustainable Fisheries Development in Vietnam,” signed by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Ms. Hang said: “Vietnamese authorities and localities will continue to regularly manage, educate, and implement specific measures to ensure fishermen comply with Vietnam’s laws and respect territorial waters of other countries, established in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and international conventions and agreements to which Vietnam is a signatory.”
“As a proactive, responsible member of the international community, Vietnam always stands ready to work with regional and global partners to strengthen cooperation and share experiences in combating illegal fishing and promote effective and sustainable fisheries management in line with international law,” Ms. Hang stressed.
