Vietnam renews efforts to achieve gender equality, eliminate violence against women

(VOVWORLD) -November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls. In Vietnam, progress has been made to achieve gender equality and prevent gender-based violence.

Currently 59% of ministries and ministerial-level agencies in Vietnam have key female leaders. 74.6% of provincial governments have key female leaders. The ratio of female deputies to the 15th National Assembly reached 30.26%, higher than the world and regional average, ranking first in the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.

The gender gap at all levels of education is narrowing. The service system to support people suffering from gender-based violence has been expanded, the role and position of women in economic fields has been enhanced, and the rate of female business owners this year is 28.2%. Many Vietnamese female officers have also joined the UN peacekeeping force.

On April 9 this year, the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected Vietnam to the Executive Council of the UN Women agency for the 2025-2027 term.

Dao Ngoc Dung, Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee for the Advancement of Vietnamese Women, said “gender equality and empowering women is one of the goals that Vietnam has achieved and even exceeded the Millennium Goals. The World Economic Forum’s gender equality index 2024 ranked Vietnam in 72nd position out of 146 countries, up 11 places."

For years Vietnam has organized "Action Month for gender equality and prevention of gender-based violence", from November 15 to December 15 every year, receiving strong responses from localities and agencies.

Last year, more than 6,000 communication activities were deployed, engaging more than 950,000 participants (of whom men accounted for about 30%). More than 1.4 million leaflets and communication products were made. It was estimated that more than 10 million people accessed media messages about gender equality and violence against women and girls.
