Vietnam responds to International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
(VOVWORLD) - September 16th is observed as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The slogan for this day in 2021 is "Montreal Protocol - Keeping us, our food, and vaccines cool". It highlights a united global effort to phase out ozone-depleting substances in order to slow down climate change and boost energy efficiency in the cooling sector, which contributes to food security and vaccine storage.

In response, Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has launched an art competition to select entries for the competition of the Asia-Pacific region, which underscores the connection between ozone preservation and climate change, recognizes the achievements of the Montreal protocol, and seeks public consensus on cutting down the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) and other substances which destroy ozone in the upper atmosphere.
Vietnam signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992. In 1994, Vietnam joined the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
One of Vietnam’s major advances in protecting the ozone layer is the 2020 Law on Environmental Protection, which will take effect next year. This law covers management of ozone-depleting substances, coordination among state agencies, and simplification of administrative procedures, and provides a legal framework for realizing the Montreal protocol in Vietnam.
