Mr. Son said the conference is significant as it will draw lessons from 20 years of experience in negotiations between the two countries from 1999 to 2019 and set out directions for the land border work, including promoting negotiations on demarcation and marker planting of the remaining 16% of the border line.
FM Son stressed two treaties on the border between Vietnam and Cambodia that came into effect on December 22, 2020. They are supplementary to the 1985 Treaty on the Delineation of National Boundaries and the 2005 Supplementary Treaty.
This is an important event in the traditional friendship and a milestone in the history of cooperation in resolving border and territorial issues between the two countries, he said.
“The results reflected in the two documents have contributed to enhancing the quality of the Vietnam-Cambodia border in terms of dossiers, legal documents and on the ground, helping functional forces and people on both sides of the border easily identify the border line," the FM said, adding "This has created a legal and practical basis for cooperation in management and protection of borders and landmarks, ensured national defense and security, and improved the material and spiritual life of border residents. It is contributing to maintaining and consolidating the Vietnam-Cambodia border of peace, stability, friendship, and cooperation for sustainable development.”
