The plant was completed and put into operation just 17 months after the groundbreaking. This is VinFast's fourth operational facility worldwide, its first plant in Indonesia and Southeast Asia outside of Vietnam.
Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, said that opening the Subang plant was a strategic move for VinFast, as Indonesia is a key market. The most populous country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has strong economic ambitions, and its electric vehicle market is growing rapidly, he said, adding "that’s why VinFast was committed to completing the plant and delivering on our promises."
This project also marks VinFast’s entry into right-hand-drive markets. While vehicles in Vietnam are left-hand-drive, the Indonesia plant will produce right-hand-drive vehicles, Chau said, adding that this marks an important step forward in building a VinFast ecosystem in Indonesia.
Airlangga Hartarto, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, praised VinFast as a contributor to making Subang a regional hub for electric vehicles. Hartarto said that Vietnam’s investment in Indonesia has grown in recent years, with VinFast creating about 1,700 jobs in Subang and helping build thousands of EV charging stations across the country.
The plant, located on a 170-hectare site, is being developed in multiple phases with a total investment of more than 1 billion USD. In subsequent phases, its production capacity will be scaled up to 350,000 vehicles per year to meet Indonesia's growing demand and unlock export opportunities.
