World leaders congratulate French President-elect Emmanuel Macron

(VOVWORLD) - Centrist Emmanuel Macron’s victory in the French presidential election took to the world spotlight on Monday. Macron received strong message of support from numerous world leaders, after the result was announced.

Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Macron, saying China stands ready to work with France to move the strategic Sino-French partnership to a higher level.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said “the victory of President-elect Macron is a symbolic victory against inward-looking and protectionist moves and shows a vote of confidence in the EU”.

Macron told German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a phone call following his victory that he will soon visit Berlin. Steffen Seibert, spokesman for the German chancellor, delivered his congratulations to Macron and said his’s victory is one for a strong and united Europe and for French-German friendship.

President of the Czech Republic Bohuslav Sobotka said he hopes that France, under Macron’s presidency, will have a large influence on many of the EU’s decisions.

The majority of Austria's political leaders reacted positively to the triumph. Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern congratulated Macron via his Facebook page, writing that the outcome represents a victory for "the forces that stand for openness and a strong Europe".

Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also took to Twitter to congratulate Macron on his resounding victory.
