(VOVWORLD) - Four Vietnamese universities have found a place in the global ranking by subject which was released by the British education company Quacquarelli Symonds. The College of Agriculture of Cần Thơ University was ranked first in Vietnam and in the 251-300 group of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Nearly 1,400 schools of 158 countries and territories were assessed by the 2020 QS World University Rankings according to subject. Cần Thơ University was given the highest rank in Vietnam and ranked in the 251-300 group amongst other Agriculture & Forestry schools which major in Farming, Breeding, Fishery. Cần Thơ University is the only Vietnamese entry in the subject of Agriculture & Forestry.
According to Associate Professor Doctor Lê Văn Vàng, Head of the College of Agriculture at Cần Thơ University, universities were ranked by four criteria: Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Research citations per paper, and the H-index. The final criteria, H-index, is a numerical indicator to measure the productivity and influence of a researcher and how this particular researcher is acknowledged amongst his or her peers in the scientific community. The College of Agriculture at Cần Thơ University scored 62.4 on the H-index, making it the highest score in relationship to the other three criteria.
Doctor Vàng said: “Due to the fact that the Agro- Forestry subject has been included in the QS rankings, the agricultural technologies developed by Can Tho University will draw greater attention worldwide. Nonetheless, we are working tirelessly towards development and growth, not a ranking.”

The College of Agriculture at Cần Thơ University was established in 1968 whose primary focus was, and still is, the training, studying, and the transference of technologies to drive the agriculture of the Mekong Delta forward, with emphasis on crop plants, livestock, and food processing.
Cần Thơ University is working towards developing its key subjects, the improvement of its ranking, the renewal of the curriculum and its teaching methodologies, while also increasing the number of its academic activities and scientific publications.
The University’s presence on the prestigious QS World University Rankings instills a sense of pride in its students.
Postgraduate Nguyễn Đoàn Quốc Duy of the College of Agriculture told VOV: “ Since I was an undergraduate, the teaching methods have greatly improved and thus the interactions between students and lecturers have also improved a great deal. I’m truly proud of my agriculture college which has won such international acclaim.”
Undergraduate Võ Thị Phương Tiên said: “I will be participating more actively in student’s scientific research in addition to my own official syllabus. We have received this honor due to the fact that The University has always been focused and consistent on promoting research in regards to both theory and practice.”
The QS World University Rankings has given Cần Thơ University the opportunity to access more resources and attract more students, which contributes greatly to the sustainable agricultural development of the Mekong Delta region.
Associate Professor Doctor Lê Việt Dũng, Vice Rector of Cần Thơ University, said: “We will be designing incentives to further develop the College of Agriculture. At the same time, we will also be reviewing other colleges to offer our support towards their growth. We are seeking a coordinated improvement of the entire University.”
