The Ministry of Education and Training has issued a framework for the 2021-2022 school year that allows each province and city to make its own plan as appropriate.
As of last Wednesday, among 40 provinces and localities to have announced school year plans, Son La province has ended its summer school break the earliest. All local students returned to school last Monday – except for kindergarteners, who will start school on September 1.
Long An province in the Mekong Delta will be the last to begin the new academic year, on September 17.
Nguyen Quoc Tuan, Director of the Education and Training Department of the northern province of Ha Nam, said, “Although we have issued a schedule for the coming school year, several things will depend on pandemic developments. Schools have been asked to be prepared for online teaching if COVID-19 gets worse.”

Phung Quoc Lap, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of the northern province of Phu Tho, says all local schools are ready for the new academic year.
They have purchased new equipment and supplies as required by the new education program for grade 2 and grade 6.
“Things are all set. Provincial authorities have used the local budget to purchase the equipment needed to meet the minimum requirements of the new program. As of the end of July, the Phu Tho Education Book and Equipment Company had supplied the new grade 2 and grade 6 textbooks,” said Lap.
Thai Van Thanh, Director of the Department of Education and Training in the central province of Nghe An, said as several areas in the province are enforcing social distancing, alternate pandemic scenarios have been in place.
“We have prepared both face-to-face and online teachingoptions. Each school will decide which option to use. An opening ceremony for the new academic year will be held on September 5, either in person or online, depending on the local epidemic situation,” said Thanh.
Many localities hit hard by the pandemic haven’t yet announced plans for the coming school year because a number of schools are still being used as quarantine facilities.
