Vietnamese expatriates held a celebration in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Sunday, where they recalled the Vietnamese people’s unyielding spirit and paid homage to martyrs and war invalids who sacrificed themselves for Vietnam’s independence.

A meeting took place at the Vietnamese Embassy in France to mark the 42nd Reunification Day and 40 years since the first Vietnam Embassy headquarters were inaugurated in France. Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung spoke at the ceremony: “The victory on April 30 was of historic significance to Vietnam. First, it reaffirmed Vietnam’s independence which the Vietnamese people tried to defend since Vietnam declared its independence in 1945. Second, it reunified Vietnam. Vietnam now is an independent country as all its people desired. Vietnam, a middle-income country, has established strategic or comprehensive cooperative partnership with all permanent members of the UN Security Council and broadened its relations with countries around the world, and Vietnam is also a member of global and regional organizations.”
