Action month of drug prevention and control launched

(VOVworld) – A meeting to respond to the Action Month for Drug Prevention and Control was held in Hanoi on June 16. Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh told attendees that protecting the community, society, families, and the younger generation from the dangers of heroin and amphetamine is an urgent task which requires coordinated preventive measures.

Mr. Binh said: “The Ministry of Education and Training has to update communication documents on drug prevention and control for primary to tertiary education. The Ministry of Public Security has to enhance activities to combat drug crimes and drug dealers inside and outside schools. The Ministry of Information and Communications needs to tighten the management of the Internet, particularly black websites inciting young people to use drugs. The culture, sports, and tourism sector will enhance the monitoring of sensitive business facilities to prevent them from sheltering drug users.”

Deputy Prime Minister Binh also underlined the role of social and political organizations in supporting and protecting the younger generation from the threat of drugs.

Pratibha Mehta, UN Coordinator in N, said UN agencies in Vietnam have worked closely with the government across many fields including policy development and appropriate medical treatment to handle the consequences of drug addiction.

The Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs in cooperation with Nam Dinh province held a meeting on Friday in responding to the Action Month for Drug Prevention and Control. Attending the event were Truong Thi Mai, Head of the Central Mass Mobilization Commission, and Christopher Batt, Officer-in charge of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vietnam. The meeting aimed to enhance collaboration among ministries, sectors, and agencies to improve people’s awareness of the risks of drugs and drug prevention and control activities in society. Ms. Mai called on ministries, sectors, and localities to integrate the drug prevention and control mission onto their action programs and have specific measures suitable for the local situation.
