Climate change negotiators in the region are attending a workshop which opened in Hanoi on Tuesday to strengthen their capacity for engaging in international climate negotiations. They will learn about the developments in international climate change policies under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). They will also learn the available negotiation space, with regard to the most critical issues ahead of a new global climate agreement by 2015.
Representatives from the UNDP in Vietnam said that the most important thing is that parties should start to consider a real negotiation text. The UNDP believes that it is critical that there should be a balanced consideration of mitigation and adaptation actions in any future climate agreement, and that developing and developed countries should come to mutual understandings and broad agreements on this as soon as possible. This requires that negotiators have a real in-depth understanding of the many complex issues.
