Earth Hour 2020 goes online globally amid Covid-19 pandemic

(VOVWORLD) - Earth Hour 2020 signaled a global unity as 180 countries and territories participated in the event online on Saturday night amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

This digital celebration aimed to ensure safety for all participants, show sympathy to patients, and extend a sincere thank to all health workers who are working tirelessly round the clock to save lives.

This year’s Earth Hour campaign urged for actions to mitigate the adverse impacts on the global biodiversity like saving energy, reducing single-use plastics, and abandoning wildlife consumption.

Earth Hour 2020 was responded actively across Vietnam. In Ho Chi Minh City, administrative buildings, hotels, and iconic landmarks switched off lights in one hour from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. The lights-off event was observed online while promotion for it was carried via radio and TV channels and banners hung at public areas.

In Kon Tum province in the Central Highlands, the light at stadiums, entertainment signs, buildings, and houses was turned off in response to Earth Hour 2020.

The Kon Tum Electricity Company held promotional activities through various channels, according to Vice Director Do Van Giap: “We have promoted this year’s Earth Hour campaign on the Internet, TV, and social networks like Facebook and Zalo. We also hang banners and slogans on streets. No gathering of crowds is permitted. Our company seeks to reduce 10% of electricity used by our branches this year.”

According to statistics, Vietnam saved 436,000 kWh electricity, worth 35,000 USD, thanks to the one-hour lights-off event of Earth Hour 2020.
