(VOVWORLD) - Participants at a seminar in Hanoi on Friday called for respect of national independence and sovereignty, and compliance with international law and freedom of navigation and aviation in the region.
Discussions focused on Indo-Pacific region, a new term proposed by US President Donald Trump at the 2017 APEC Summit in Vietnam’s Da Nang City. They said that a country, no matter it is big or small, cannot isolate itself from international order in a globalized world with interdependence. Professor Pham Quang Minh, Head of Hanoi’s University of Social Sciences and Humanities, said: "Today seminar’s topic includes freedom of navigation, respect for international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and prosperity of the region, including that of the East Sea. The Indo-Pacific region’s principles are directly linked to the situation in the East Sea, and this seminar indicates how provocations are complicating the situation in the East Sea."
The seminar attracted high-profile experts including Noah Zaring, Political Counselor at the US Embassy in Hanoi, Professor Benjamin Reilly of West Australia University, Professor Go Ito of Japan’s Meiji University, and Professor Doctor Rahuk Mishra of India.
