PM: Vietnam attaches great importance to sci-tech, innovation

(VOVWORLD) - The 2024 VinFuture Prize ceremony was held in Hanoi on Friday. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended and delivered a remark at the event.

The four winning projects were selected from nearly 1,500 outstanding nominations submitted by researchers across more than 80 countries and territories. The Grand Prize, valued at 3 million USD, was awarded to five eminent scientists: Professor Yoshua Bengio and Professor Geoffrey E. Hinton of Canada, Mr. Jen-Hsun Huang, Professor Yann LeCun, and Professor Fei-Fei Li of the US in recognition of their pioneering work in advancing "deep learning" .

Additionally, three Special Prizes recognized transformative projects on "innovative improvement of oral cholera vaccination in developing countries," "advancement in design of polymeric biomaterials and methods for biomedical applications," and "development of CAR T cell therapy for cancer and other diseases." These groundbreaking initiatives address pressing global challenges and contribute to shaping the future.

In his address, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highlighted the theme of "Resilient Breakthrough" of VinFuture 2024, emphasizing its role in celebrating revolutionary research and innovations with profound impacts, empowering humanity to overcome challenges and aspire to greater heights.

"I hope that scientists, the business community, investors, and partners inside and outside the country will continue to collaborate closely, providing effective support and assistance to enable Vietnam to achieve further breakthroughs in enhancing its scientific and technological capacity and fostering innovation. These efforts will serve as a driving force for significant progress in realizing Vietnam's strategic goals of becoming a developing country with a modern industrial base and high-middle income by 2030, and a developed, high-income country by 2045. Vietnam pledges to create the most favorable conditions for science, technology, and innovation to flourish," said the Prime Minister.

With the success of four consecutive seasons, the VinFuture Prize has firmly established itself as one of the world’s most prestigious science and technology awards. Remarkably, many VinFuture laureates have gone on to receive recognition at other globally renowned awards, further underscoring the prize's global significance.
