Storm Wipha lands in Quang Ninh, weakens to tropical depression

(VOVWORLD) - Storm Wipha weakened into a tropical depression on Saturday after making landfall in Quang Ninh Province early the same day.

The Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control is asking localities to closely follow the storm development and take measures to prevent floods and landslide. Mr. Tran Quang Hoai, Deputy Head of the Committee, said: “It’s essential to take prompt measures to assure the safety for people in the areas prone to landslide or flash flood. Special attention should be paid to ensure safety of dykes, and transportation system. The transportation sector should direct localities to put up warning sign posts in dangerous areas to prevent accidents”.

Storm Wipha caused torrential rains in Mong Cai, Hai Ha, Binh Lieu, Cam Pha and Ha Long in Quang Ninh province. Many trees were fallen by heavy rains and strong wind, and more than 100 households in Tien Yen district were isolated. Mr. Vu Van Kinh, Chairman of Mong Cai City’s People’s Committee, said: “Heavy rains will continue for few more days and are likely to cause floods. Mong Cai City is implementing measures to clear and drain the sewage system to prevent floods and protect agricultural land. We will continue to control the water level in the rivers in the border areas to evacuate and assure safety for people and the property”.

Nearly 36 hectares of rice and other crops were destroyed by the storm in Hai Phong. Many people from flood and landslide hit areas have been evacuated.

1 person died and 10 others went missing due to the effect of storm Wipha.
