Ly Van Lam Middle and High School in Ca Mau city has recently received a bookcase as part of the “Book and Action” project. The students decorate their reading space, raise book funds, and operate their own libraries.

“Reading will give us knowledge and experience to realize our dreams and ambitions. Our reading club’s slogan is that reading leads to action,” said Doan Thu Thao, a 10th grader at Ly Van Lam School..

Cao Trong Nghia, another 10th grader at Ly Van Lam School, said, “Book are important for they bring us lots of benefits. Books teach us many precious lessons and experiences in life.”

In response to the project, 10 schools in Ca Mau have set up “Book and Action”  clubs which have established free libraries and regularly organized activities to encourage the reading habit. These include a Book Day, a Book Festival, and a Book Contest. The clubs also raise charity funds and help students apply the knowledge they have learned from reading books.

“This is the first time a book project has been implemented in schools in Ca Mau province. We hope that it will provide students with more opportunities to read and experience new activities,” Do Nguyen Huong Giang, Chairwoman of Ho Chi Minh City’s “Book and Action” project, said.

According to recent survey by the Institute for Studies of Society, Economy and Environment on what young people mainly do with their free time, nearly 42% of the respondents said they go online, 20% watch movies, 16.7% listen to music and only 15% read books.

The vigorous development of technology with many audio-visual media and social media has taken up a lot of young people’s time. The main goal of the “Book and Action” project is to awaken young people’s love for reading and appreciate the values of printed books in the digital era.
