A recent survey by Nielsen Vietnam shows that 80% of Vietnamese consumers are ready to pay more for clean, green products and those which are produced with environment-friendly materials. This reflects a radical change in Vietnamese consumers’ awareness. According to the survey, brands with commitments to clean and green products have recorded relatively high growth, around 4%.

The green consumption trend has produced the boom of clean food chains like Soi Bien, Bac Tom (Uncle Tom), Home Food, and Hanoi Farm to meet the demand for clean products with a clear origin. Many milk tea and coffee shops have been greening by using bamboo straws or stainless steel straws instead of plastic straws or paper bags instead of plastic bags. Major supermarkets like Co.opmart and Lotte Mart have reduced their use of plastic bags and plastic waste, and wrap vegetables and fruits in banana leaves or other environmental friendly materials.

Vietnam is now adopting and fine-tuning legal frameworks and policies on green consumption to promote green production and products, encourage sectors that apply clean technologies, strengthen green production, prioritize the development of renewable energy, use natural resources efficiently and effectively, and promote green technology.

Vietnamese businesses are developing and expanding green business models and providing price incentives for green products and services to stimulate green consumption.

They are improving environmental protection efforts, reforming their production chains and technology, developing clean energy, renewable energy, and production technology to save resources and energy, prioritizing environment-friendly inputs, and paying attention to consumers’ health.

The government has strengthened communications to raise the public awareness about the importance of green consumption in protecting the living environment and people’s health in order to change their awareness and action to protect the environment.

Changing consumers’ habits takes time. But with consumers’ readiness and the engagement of state agencies and businesses, the green consumption trend is growing rapidly in Vietnam.
