Strategic breakthroughs strengthened to ensure national energy security in new era

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam has identified ensuring national energy security as a top political task in the new era. Vietnam has been focusing on reforming corporate governance, applying science and technology, promoting digital transformation and innovation, and modernizing the power grid.

Ensuring national energy security and electricity sufficiency is a key to rapid economic growth and the success of Vietnam’s industrialization and modernization. Vietnam’s aim for strong economic growth demands increased electricity output which require new solutions for power source development, particularly base-load, green, clean, sustainable energy sources.

Resolute to ensure sufficient power

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has regularly inspected and urged the removal of obstacles to power source and transmission grid projects. He insists that under no circumstances should there be a power shortage. Attending the 4th Party Congress of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) for the 2025-2030 term last Sunday, Prime Minister Chinh said: “Electricity production must meet the country’s development needs, including electricity for household and production demands, while also supporting the goal of double-digit economic growth. This is a significant challenge.”

The Prime Minister asked the electricity sector to take the initiative in developing fuel sources for power generation, in particular coal exploitation. He called on the sector to strive to rank among the Top 3 in ASEAN, or even higher.

Emphasizing the importance of having a long-term vision and roadmap for the development of the power sector, he urged breakthroughs in developing power sources and grids, particularly nuclear and clean energy.

“The current trend is nuclear power. There are more than 400 nuclear power plants worldwide, and in many countries, nuclear power provides more than 50% of total electricity. The main issue is ensuring safety of nuclear power. We must ensure clean power and take drastic measures to develop power source and transmission,” said Mr. Chinh.

Strategic breakthroughs

Based on Government directives, the power sector has identified strategic breakthroughs, particularly in the investment and construction of power sources and grids. One notable achievement was the completion of the Quang Trach–Pho Noi 500kV circuit-3 transmission line in August 2024, just six months after starting construction.

Nguyen Huu Tuan, Deputy Secretary of EVN’s Party Committee, said: “We’ve identified solutions to create breakthroughs in the investment and construction of power source and grid projects. We aim to shorten the schedules of key projects, modernize the power sector from production to transmission and distribution to be capable of integrating large-scale renewable energy sources. We also aim to promote an energy transition toward green and sustainable development, complete 12 power source projects; and to start construction of the Quang Trach 3 LNG project in 2026 and complete it by 2030.”

Given the target of high economic growth, with electricity demand expected to increase 11% or more, the power sector must develop appropriate power supply scenarios and reform its business management toward international standards.

In the new era, science, technology, digital transformation, and innovation are identified as the key drivers for the power sector to grow further.

The Government’s direction for the power sector and related ministries is aligned with Vietnam’s goal of becoming a developed high-income country by 2045 and realizing its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
